FUNCTION: A COMMENTARY

Function describes the objectives or tasks a system is intended to perform. With lighthouses, the list of functions began to shrink with time due to telemetry. But changing circumstances can cause the list of functions to grow, too. The speculum is an unusual example where

form, fit, and function remain unchanged.

Here's one perspective

A view through a different lens

A Brief History of Material Science & Reliability Engineering

Material science was a natural outgrowth of the race to the moon in the 1960s. Biomaterials was also a burgeoning field. In addition, World War II injuries gave scientists new information about a soldier's ability to tolerate foreign bodies (such as windshield particles or shrapnel).

In reliability engineering, Weibull analysis let us predict when a product would fail. W. Weibull explained the distribution in detail in the 1950s but it was first documented in the 1920s and 30s.

The Business of Breakage is Born: Planned Obsolescence

With the improved understanding of wear out and manufacturing processes, the concept of reliability could take on a new function for the company as a revenue driver. This is how the extended warranty became popular in the 1960s and 70s.

In healthcare, are single patient use devices really better for patients? or is the issue of sterilization a pretext for driving greater consumption and higher profits?

Same form, same fit, same clinical function: suppose no new training is required for the speculum but a new innovation in material reinvigorates the profitability of an old idea through single patient use. The material allows an old design (the old form, the old fit) to serve an additional new function, not for the patient or the doctor, but for the company.

You are the anchor

(in 20-1029) Maybe the "content-based" framework is trying to do too much work... perhaps the only place where that can be properly implemented is in places where an "emergency switch" already exists. After all, unlawful speech can also be "discriminated against based on content."

I have probably exhausted what can be done here with this medium.

As a chronic completionist, it pains me to post this draft (sorry about the typos and incomplete thoughts), but you can do more with what's here much faster than I can. RUN.

Mnemonic Music: A Memory Device

Music can be a highly effective memory aid. After you tour this entire website, first listen to its audio without watching this video. What do you recall about the communication containing each song? The function of the structure (form) of each song is to help you remember. Based on its fit with the content on these webpages, this music was designed to resonate with you.

Thurgood Marshall Accepts the Prestigious Liberty Award

"The legal system can force open doors and sometimes even knock down walls. But it cannot build bridges. That job belongs to you and me."

Thurgood Marshall's Acceptance Speech

Dear Visitor,

Together we built bridges, launched into outer space, and took a piggyback ride that was out of this world. I did what I could with what I had to make a long story short. If you stuck around for it all, whether or not I am one of you, you are almost certainly one of us.

In the words of Dr. Zachary Stein:

"So, I'll pause there. That was a lot."
